🎣 Good Fluking, Good Eating!

Decided to put the surf rod down and grabbed an ultralight setup from Maco’s Bait & Tackle. I headed out to the docks where I normally catch stripers in the early spring, knowing it’s also a great spot for fluke. Figured I’d give it a shot—and I had never targeted fluke from shore before!

All I needed were some 3/8 oz jig heads with a little Gulp bait. White and pink seemed to be the chosen color. Light twitches and a slow retrieve was the ticket. I really like the first couple hours of the outgoing tide for optimal feeding conditions, but they were biting throughout the entire tide.

Had a few keepers mixed in, but mostly smaller ones. Still, it’s always a blast catching them on light tackle! Even the smaller fish put a bend in the rod and made for a lot of fun.

It was my first time targeting fluke from shore, and it definitely won’t be my last. Sometimes putting down the surf rod and trying something different is all it takes to discover a whole new way to enjoy a familiar fishing spot. And when you can bring home a few good fluke for the dinner table, that’s even better.
